September 2022 Update
Greetings, trust you’ve all had a safe and memorable summer. For those of you that have suffered losses, setbacks or are finding this tough season we find ourselves in difficult to manage our thoughts are with you and the board is wishing you well as we move into fall. Come on out and build some community and see where that might lead you. If you’re finding it hard to make ends meet this year let us know. We have some room for gifting a few memberships this year. Reach out. We’ll make it work.
This summer I was fortunate enough to travel to Europe with my family. I found myself walking in the footsteps of Socrates and Aristotle at the Agora. I visited with the Oracle at The Temple of Apollo at Delphi. Remarkable moments I will never forget. I reread Plato’s Apology while sitting under an olive tree as a parrot picked away at the fruit above my head. Isn’t it wonderful? Words of the renowned magician Charles Bertram. All philosophy begins in wonder and Socrates believed and taught that wonder was the beginning of wisdom. We’re in the wonder making business. Some think it was Yeats who said, “The world is full of magical things patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” Wow. A poet reminding us all that we’re surrounded by beauty, wonder, life and moments of pure astonishment. Dig in.
We’re in full planning mode and have several exciting events planned for this season. Watch for a few surprises this year as we celebrate our 80th Anniversary: like our winter fundraising show, a new memorial library, a Ring 17 special article, Linking Ring Parade and several great lectures including James Alan, Joshua Jay and Alain Coquette. I do hope you’ve already noticed that our logo has been refreshed and released and is now live on the website.
Under The Hat is back with two new episodes ready to be released shortly with former International IBM president Ken Scott and Steve Cohen on his work and new book about Max Malini.
And Ben Train has a lovely new effect he was kind enough to share with us that we’ll be releasing to club members only very soon.
If you’re one of those who opted for auto renewals this year, then consider yourself fortunate if you’ve already paid as we’ll be increasing dues to $70. Inflation is a thing this year, but if you can pay before the 29th of September you’ll still get last years rate. There is a new membership form that will need attending to and a space to sign off on ababiding by the Code of Conduct and Constitution. Thanks.
Our first meeting will be Thursday, September 29th and will be held at the Agricola, Finnish Lutheran Church at Yonge and York Mills - 25 Old York Mills Road. Free Parking, a kilometer or two from the 401, steps away from the subway and restaurants in the area. The lecture will begin at 7 pm, but the keeners will be arriving around 6:30 pm. Hope to see you there. Refreshments will be served along with some keen and committed magical attitude.
Don’t forget we’re on social media, take a second to like, retweet or repost. We’d appreciate it!
And as always please don’t forget to support the Browser’s Den. I’ve heard rumour that WonderPhil aka Phil Pivnick is lecturing there on October 21st. Check it out.
See you all soon, David
