Hat and Rabbit Club Charity Show 2021

Hello dearest members of the Hat & Rabbit Club, I hope you are all doing well, and maybe even back doing magic for real honest to goodness flesh and blood human beings.

Last year we all came together to put on a special online fundraiser show benefiting the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Together we put on a show that went for over two hours with 19 magicians. But more importantly, we raised over $7,000 for cancer research. Now, we're at it again!

This year, we will be raising money for Toronto's Daily Bread Food Bank. We're asking for your help to do two things

  1. Share a piece of magic on video for the show.

  2. Spread the word so we can raise as much money as possible.

Magicians, as you all know, are a sneaky bunch. We prefer to work smarter and not harder. So our show, even though it looked like it was happening live, was all pre-recorded and edited in advance. So we didn't have to worry whether a trick might not work, or someone's internet connection might give out part way through. One of our extra sneaky members was even able to live-tweet the whole event with pre-scheduled social media posts.

To participate we would like you to film a piece of magic we can share. Here are the requirements:

  1. Tell us what you would like to perform before you shoot it so we can make sure we don't have the same trick in the show twice.

  2. It should be under 5 minutes long

  3. It should be family friendly

  4. It should be shot landscape (no vertical video!)

  5. You can include topical material for the holiday season or donating food, but you don't have to.

  6. If you are using volunteers, please use people you know well so you can perform close together without wearing masks. Makes it easier to see and hear.

  7. Don't do the same trick you did last year!

The show is pre-recorded which means you can take your time and shoot as many takes as you want and make sure you get something you are proud of. It's relatively easy to shoot high quality video with your smartphone (see our filming guide here). And the best part is, the night of the show you can sit back and relax and just enjoy.

If you really want help filming your piece, we might be able to get another member to meet up with you to help. So let us know and we will see what we can do.

The show itself will be broadcast in lieu of our December meeting on Thursday, December 9. That means we would like to have all of the video in to turn over to the editor by November 30. If you could let us know what trick/s you want to film by November 20, that will help us (and all of the other performers) plan for what to do.

So please send me an email (james@jamesalan.ca) or give me a call (416.995.1736) and let us know that you're in.

We're still in the process of getting the fundraising page set up so that people can donate and get a tax receipt. So please for now, keep the show our little secret. We'll tell the world about it soon.

Thank you all for being part of the club and for sticking together through two very difficult years. We know a real face-to-face club meeting is just around the corner and we can't wait to see you all. But for now, we're asking you give an extra helping of magic to the Daily Bread Food Bank.
